Botulinum therapy (shortened to B.tox) is swiftly becoming established in Sydney society and now it has become an essential part of any beauty routine for individuals in Sydney. But I am always astonished when I hear the rumours surrounding the procedure. I have listed below some of the more myths which we encounter daily at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a physician.
Mistaken Belief # 1: I will lose my facial expressions!
Underneath the skin of the face are 60 or so muscles. These ordinarily work in harmony, however over a period of time expression lines may form. If surplus B.tox is injected the facial expression can become a little less expressive. The quantity injected by most doctors will result in you appearing ‘refreshed’, but still you will always keep your facial expression.
Thus by using the proper amount of the toxin in precisely the right muscles facial expression is retained whilst the fine lines are smoothed.
Mistaken Belief # 2: B.tox is toxic!
This to some extent is right. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In massive doses it may result in a decrease in muscle tone and can cause sickness.
However to keep everything in perspective: an old chemist’s expression states that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. Every medication in a big enough dosage may make you unwell. If you drink too much water you will die.
Mistaken Belief # 3: B.tox will sting!
The hypodermic needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than a human hair. A lot of patients have said that the injections are not as painful as a mosquito bite. It is certainly less traumatic than something like a vaccination.
Mistaken Belief # 4: My face will not be as sensitive!
This is totally incorrect. B.tox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerves. B.tox just affects the ability to relax muscles.
Mistaken Belief # 5. You need to keep having B.tox or else you might wrinkle faster than ever!
Also untrue.
The first set of injections will be effective for approximately 3 months. Any injections after the first one commonly last a little longer. The wrinkles will gradually return as the muscle regains its normal function. However they certainly will not be deeper than when you commenced your treatment.

In fact any lines will generally be softer than if you had never had B.tox injections - even when you don’t persevere with the injections. Due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
