My tried-and-true method of playing tournament Texas Hold ‘Em is to start the game out playing my tightest game of online poker. I was on an open-ended straight draw with middle pair, and I figured that I had enough outs to make a play for the blinds. Unfortunately, I was called by a crafty player who made a great read on me. Unfortunately, he also made top pair. I was willing to lose the chips, but I quickly realized that I had pretty much sacrificed by bluffing power for the sake of some measly early-round blinds. For the rest of the night, I was getting bluffs called left and right by opponents who had seen by early bluff, and my stack was suffering for it. Don’t make the same mistake I did-each time you bluff, you run a greater chance of getting called, so don’t steal the blinds until they’re worth stealing. Remember this when you play poker online.

Different online poker players approach this game in different games. While everyone had their own unique take on when and where they should play, there is one approach to poker online that could signify a very serious problem. If you feel the need to be secretive about your poker playing, you could be on a very dangerous road to poker addiction.

Let’s look at the reasons why a secretive approach to poker online is so detrimental. When you re secretive about an activity, whether it be poker or otherwise, you feel the need to hide this activity from the world. People are often driven to hide their poker playing because they feel ashamed or guilty that they are playing poker instead of focusing on other areas of their life. Most players fall somewhere under the heading of average. There are a few shining stars who play like they can internalize rule books by osmosis, but most of us play like we have read a bit, studies a bit, and played a bit. The thing is, it is not bad to be an average player. In fact, the recognition that your skill set is right around your opponent’s can be an emboldening experience. It can make you focus more and really concentrate when you play for just that extra edge.

To know if you fall into the wide band of average, it is important to figure out just how good the average player is. Let’s look at what today’s average player knows. All in all, a pretty good haul of chips came my way, and a new great poker memory.

Pennsylvaniathe Annenberg Public Policy Center has recently released a study of the incidence of online poker and gambling among youth is slightly higher than it was in 2007. The survey, which samples 900 random young people, found that 3.3 percent of males high school to university aged had played cards for money in the past month. This is up nearly a point from last year’s 2.4 percent.

Those playing poker on a weekly basis was also up to 1.7 from 1.1 percent last year. However, card playing in general was fairly steady, with approximately 26% of the population partaking in some type of card game, not necessarily for monetary means.

Dan Romer, Director of the Annenberg Adolescence Risk Communication Institute, said, “the card playing fad seems to have lost its steam among your people ages 14-22.” But, he revealed that since the passage of the UIGEA, the numbers have been on a steady decline for the population in general, not just the youth.

Of course, any advocate of poker would take Romer’s next comments with a grain of salt, as he shows his true stance on the issue. “The continued use of online gambling sites by many young people indicates that they are still risking their financial futures on poker.” The study indicated that at least 300,000 American youth still wager online on a weekly basis.

Now I can’t advocate underage gambling by any stretch of the imagination, but for those who are 18+, it seems there’s no problem with ensure they have the freedom to do what they wish with their leisure time.

Romer ends with this: “This calls for continued efforts to educate young people about the hazards of internet gambling.” If by hazards he means how to discern legitimate sites from scam or fraud sites, sure. But it’s this very thinking that continues to haunt the US markets, and drive the fans to unregulated “dangers” that outright legalization could prevent. Touché Mr. Romer, touché.
