Public Speaking: Bilingual Help

Filed under: Publishing Center — admin @ 7:56 pm

When going over room setup and audio / visual requirements with a foreign logistics person, make sure you do it in advance of the presentation (hopefully several times), and have a bilingual person there to ensure that both you and the logistics person are on the same wavelength.

Be in the room very early on the day of the speaking engagement (at least two hours before the public enters the room) and, if possible, have your bilingual helper there too. Terms that are familiar to most English speaking speakers are difficult to translate into a foreign language.

One good idea is to take pictures of the various items you may need (overhead projector, white board, etc.) and carry them with you to the event.

When you want something, all you have to do is show the picture which, when you are desperate in a foreign country, is worth a million words.

Need To Write An Article? ‘Three’ Is A Magic Number!

Filed under: Publishing Center — admin @ 5:29 pm

Writing articles for magazines, the Internet or the local community paper needn’t be a headache. Providing they are informative, reasonably short and to the point, readers and publishers will welcome your articles.

But, if the secret to writing neat, sweet articles is to keep them succinct, how do you maintain your focus and avoid the pitfalls of waffle?

Try the 3 by 3 Plan!

Taking a really simple example, suppose you want to write about kites. The first stage is to brainstorm all the possible topics under the heading of ‘Kites’. You may come up with several ideas here: for example, kite history, kite safety or making a kite. Any of these subjects could form the basis of a good article.

Select just one of these ideas (let’s choose ‘kite-making’) and then you can start to put the ‘3 by 3 Plan’ into action.

Brainstorm again to extract just three topics related to kite-making. Remember, you want to stay focused in your article, so three is a good number to begin with! The topics you find could be:

1. Types of kite
2. Parts of a kite
3. Decorating a kite

Now, for each of your three main topics, select three linked sub-topics that will relate to your audience. Children (or parents, for that matter!) might want to know the basic information about:

1. Types of kite - (a) Classic diamond (b) Hexagon (c) Star

2. Parts of a kite - (a) Sails (b) Spars (c) Flying lines

3. Decorating a kite - (a) Painting (b) T-shirt transfer paper (c) Applique

Once your plan is in place, write three sentences about each of your (a), (b) and (c) sub-topics. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your article will grow and how sharp and to-the-point your finished writing will be.

And finally, staying with the idea of three as your ‘magic’ number, here are three more tips:

1. Make sure you have a connecting or transition sentence between each main topic. A good linking phrase will entice your reader to keep on reading!

2. Write your introduction after you’ve written the main body of the article. Keep it interesting but limit it to 3 sentences!

3. If you want to write a longer article, use 5 or 7 as your ‘magic’ number …

Defining the Web Audience

Filed under: Publishing Center — admin @ 3:48 pm

The first step a writer must take before starting any work is
defining the audience; who he/she is writing to. At last count
there were an estimated billion Web users. Writing content for
the World Wide Web means writing for a vast, multilingual,
multicultural audience of varied educational background. The web
is spreading rapidly through the third world. Though English is
now the dominant language, it has been forecast that by the end
of 2007, there will be more Chinese than English screens. The
literacy rate of users is rising as the internet spreads and
education improves. Ever widening differences in cultures must
be taken into account as less developed countries gain increased
access. Though it is nearly impossible to define such a huge and
varied audience, let us start with what we know we can say about
users in the web audience.

Internet Users (aka Surfers)

The internet is a fast medium; hypertext allows users to travel
at light speed. One click and they’re gone. Think of users as
busy, impatient, petulant children with an attention span of
about ten seconds, who are on the web to find something or find
out something and find it fast.

Now, let’s attempt to define the most universal classification;
men, women and the kids.

Men

Men continue to be the most important users of the web,
especially when spending enters the equation, and pursue
internet activities more extensively than women though not as
much as the hyper-kinetic youth. Assailed on all sides by the
latest gadgets and toys, pressured at work, diverted by the wife
and kids, mind on other things; it’s amazing he can find the
time.

Women

Women are fast catching up to men as internet users, though
their concerns are more focused on connections with people than
business and technology. They still hold the purse strings and
will ultimately dominate use of the web. Baby on her knee,
kids in the car, dinner not yet in the oven, the house a mess,
still plenty of shopping to do, needing the internet as much if
not more than anyone; she doesn’t have the time.

Kids

The younger generation have embraced the new technology
wholeheartedly, especially 12-28 year olds, and are by far the
largest users of the web. Cell phone in one ear, Ipod in the
other, parents on their case, friends at beck and call,
pretending to do schoolwork, exploring the hottest sites,
chatting on IM, listening to the latest tunes, downloading the
latest videos, playing online games - all at the same time;
so much to do, so little time.

What is the Web Audience

Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common;
they don’t have the time. They want it short, they want it
obvious and they want it right now. Hyper-impatient, they scan
and react; clicking and moving on. Users read only what catches
their eye. They look for headings, lists, tables, small
digestible bites of text and links.

How to Write for that Audience

Text is seen not necessarily read. Keep it short, simple and to
the point. Use simple words and simple sentences to describe
simple ideas. Keep it conversational without being overly
familiar and chatty. Avoid all lingo, slang and jargon and stay
away from the overly popular words that have crept into our
speech (really, like, basically). Minimize adjectives and
adverbs; they adorn, not tell. Though you may be writing to
millions, try to keep it personal and make it human.

Strict rules of grammar and punctuation do not necessarily
apply to the web. Keep punctuation to a minimum; periods and
commas are enough. The classic paragraph is obsolete; divide
text into chunks or blocks. The sentence, the basis of all
composition, is under attack as well; phrases and even fragments
serve. Use headings extensively and keep them as short as
possible. Lists (numbered and bulleted) organize information
visually and make it more accessible; use them often. Tables
convey enormous amounts of information quickly; use them
whenever feasible. Employ text graphically. Typography (font,
size, style, weight, leading) contains an enormous amount of
power. Readers will read more if they see it. Use it to get
their attention; even if it practically jumps out and bites
them. The web is a hypertext medium, use plenty of links.

And remember, no matter who you are or who you think you
are, and who you think they are, don’t ever talk down to your
readers. Treat them with care and respect.

The Artistry of Change: How to Turn Fear & Doubt Into Brilliance as a Public Speaker

Filed under: Publishing Center — admin @ 11:48 pm

One day a poor wandering minstrel found a chunk of lead. He knew of a great alchemist in a far off land that could turn lead into gold. With only a few crumbs of bread left, he decided to risk his luck and see if he could reach this land. He carted this heavy rock for days imagining all that the gold could buy him and his family. Just when he was ready to collapse, he saw in the distance the castle where the Alchemist served the great Queen Oriana.

Exhausted, he fell into a deep sleep under a tree. Suddenly he was startled awake by an old woman. Under her murky gaze and toothless grin, she warned him about falling asleep here. The forest was teeming with man-eating trolls. Then, she offered him a truffle from her basket, but he was sure it was as poisonous as her breath. He lurched to his feet and ran away finding a boulder to hide behind. The old woman appeared suddenly behind him. She warned him he would starve in the woods if he kept running. He pivoted on his heel and ran around the boulder. Again she appeared in his path. He would never find his way back unless he had her help. There was a condition he must satisfy before she would help.

He must play his fiddle as if the old woman was his beloved. He gagged at the thought. If he failed, she would leave him to die at the hands of the trolls. He reached into his imagination and saw this wicked old woman as the beautiful Queen Oriana. He played with all his heart.

After he finished his song, he witnessed the old crone’s face soften, become warmer and more youthful. Delightedly, she took the minstrel’s arm and led him out of the forest. As the trees thinned, a carriage appeared and the minstrel was amazed when footmen ushered them in. The driver addressed her as the Queen’s hand maiden. The carriage headed toward the castle and stopped at the door of lush guest quarters. There she left him to be fed by the servants and get a good night’s sleep.

The next evening, a courtier ushered him over to the Queen’s banquet room carrying his beautifully-carved fiddle. Queen Oriana was even more beautiful that he had imagined with her sparkling green eyes and wavy golden hair. She was resplendent in a crimson gown set off by a beautiful topaz ring on her smallest finger. By her side sat the Great Alchemist, a wizened gentleman with piercing eyes, a dark complexion and a white turban. He held a perfectly round stone that sparkled with millions of colors.

The Queen’s Handmaiden reported that he played magically. Queen Oriana motioned him to begin. The minstrel thought this might be his only chance, so he pulled out the piece of lead from his tunic and placed it before them. “If you can show me how to turn this rock into gold, I will play for you,” he said. Hundreds of courtiers burst into laughter. His heart leap into his throat.

The Alchemist said, let us do this exchange in reverse. Play your fiddle with all your heart then I will show you how to turn lead into gold. He was wary. What if the alchemist did not honour his word? The minstrel shook his head and within seconds, the guards were summoned to drag him away. “Wait!” he screamed, “I will play for you.” The Queen waved her hand for the guards to step back.

The minstrel stared boldly into the Queen’s eyes and saw a warm-hearted woman of true beauty behind her painted face. He knew then he would play for her regardless of the outcome. Taking in a great breath, he could feel the skeptical faces of the courtiers close in around him like vultures. He exhaled and placed the bow against the strings and the most heavenly music began to flow from his fiddle.

He started softly and people leaned in to hear the precious notes. As he artfully picked up the pace, the courtiers began to sway and then dance. He played faster and faster sending everyone into delirium. As the final note rang in the great hall, the crowd cheered with elation.

As the queen fanned herself back to life, the Alchemist studied the minstrel and picked up the lead. He placed it under a cloth next to his Philosopher’s stone and then waved his hand three times. As he pulled the cloth off, the minstrel gasped at the huge solid piece of gold that now looked nothing like his piece of lead. The Alchemist handed him the gold and the minstrel uttered his humble thanks. Then he asked, “Show me how to do this myself.”

The Alchemist rejoined, “You already know how. That is your payment for the music. This, on the other hand is what her highness will use as a paperweight.” He pulled his hand from behind his back and showed him the lead rock. The whole court laughed delightedly. The Queen then announced that the minstrel would be a regular musician at the court.

The very next day, the minstrel was riding his new horse to go collect his family. As he was leaving, he passed the old woman out collecting truffles again. He pulled up beside her and she offered him a truffle with a wry smile. This time he gracefully accepted and as he did, he noticed a topaz ring on her smallest finger. She smiled her toothless grin and slipped away into the forest.

Tip #1 - The Chaos/Change
Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity. It’s vital to the process. Your fear can propel you into a feeling of chaos, and chaos always precedes change. It calls you to move into the higher levels of functioning you will need to be brilliant on the platform. The trick is to accept and pay loving attention to your fear rather than recoil from it. That way you see the gifts it offers - such as important warnings to pay attention to.

Tip #2 - The Container/Artistry
Dive into the action of creativity with all your heart. This action creates a container of acceptance that allows the fear and doubt to transform. Fear inside a container of acceptance changes how your brain synapses work. They fire more efficiently, various hemispheres of the brain start working together more effectively and you gain access to your higher intelligence in the frontal lobes.

Tip #3 - The Connection/The Artistry of Change
This mind/body alchemical process turns your lead weight fear into gold. It is what makes you a true artist. As a speaker you are a performing artist, and your job is to help others transform. By modeling that process yourself, you help your audience turn their lead into gold.
